In the Department of Palynology and Climate Dynamics, pollen and spores are collected to research the history of vegetation. The collection is purely a research and teaching collection and is not exhibited.

Collection history:
In 1937 Franz Firbas was appointed professor in Göttingen; he founded the collection between 1948 and 1952.
In 1969, Prof. Beug took over the management of the collection and expanded it into one of the most extensive collections in Europe.
Prof. Behling has managed the collection since 2005 and expanded it in particular to include species from South America and Southeast Asia.

Total number of objects:
There are more than 5,000 specimens from over 3,000 different species.

Partial collections/convolutes:

  • Central Europe (approx. 2,500 species)
  • Asia High Asia, approx. 300 taxa, Mongolia approx. 580 species, Indonesia approx. 400 species
  • East Africa Approx. 1,440 species
  • Latin America Galapagos approx. 196 species, Ecuador approx. 500 species, Brazil approx. 1,425 species

Development status:
