Bereits bestehende Planungen zum Aufbau eines Universitätsmuseums bekamen damit den entscheidenden Impuls für einen rasanten Wachstumsprozess der Sammlungen aus allen drei Naturreichen sowie Ethnographica, Kunstwerke und Instrumente. Für das Jahr 1840 kann der Gesamtbestand auf ca. 12.000 Objekte geschätzt werden. Die Amtszeit des ersten Inventarisierers und späteren Oberaufsehers des Museums, Johann Friedrich Blumenbach (1752-1840) gilt als wesentliche Blüte- und Konsolidierungsphase des Museums.
