Am Axtnacken, gegenüberliegend zum Schlagteil, ist ein kugelförmiger Pfeifenkopf aus Messing ausgearbeitet; Pfeifenkopf und Klingenteil sind aus einem Stück gefertigt. Das gesamte Blatt ist mit Linien-, Punkt- und Ritzornamentik verziert. Der Stiel besteht aus braunem Holz mit ovalem Querschnitt. Das Griffende ist mit Zinn umkleidet, ein kurzes Stück Rohr kann als Mundstück (Teil b) in den in den Stiel gebohrten Rauchkanal eingesetzt werden. Bereits bestehende Planungen zum Aufbau eines Universitätsmuseums bekamen damit den entscheidenden Impuls für einen rasanten Wachstumsprozess der Sammlungen aus allen drei Naturreichen sowie Ethnographica, Kunstwerke und Instrumente. Für das Jahr 1840 kann der Gesamtbestand auf ca. 12.000 Objekte geschätzt werden. Die Amtszeit des ersten Inventarisierers und späteren Oberaufsehers des Museums, Johann Friedrich Blumenbach (1752-1840) gilt als wesentliche Blüte- und Konsolidierungsphase des Museums.
