XIII“; an der Seite „Car-thagine Ligneur Nouvelle Granada“; Bei dem Objekt handelt es sich um Chinarinde (“Cortex Chinae”), die in einem Glaszylinder versiegelt wurde. Seit dem 17. Jahrhundert wird aus dem Chinarindenbaum der Wirkstoff Chinin gewonnen, das bis ins frühe 20. Jahrhundert aufgrund der starken Wirksamkeit gegen Malaria eine der wichtigsten Drogen überhaupt darstellte. <br />Insbesondere während Forschungs- und Kolonialexpeditionen war es ein unverzichtbares Heilmittel. <br />In der Pharmakognostischen Sammlung der Universität Göttingen befinden sich 386 unterschiedliche Proben von Chinarinden, von 40 bis 50 unterschiedlichen Spezies gesammelt. An der Universität sollten anhand der Beispiele angehende Apotheker und Mediziner ausgebildet werden. <br />Da die ausgestellten Chinarinden vor 1850 zu datieren sind, erweist sich eine genaue Identifizierung der Pflanze als schwer.
